The Universe Keeps Sending Me to the Slowest Checkout Line
I don't know what I did in a previous life...
But apparently the Universe has decided that my spiritual growth happens almost exclusively at grocery store checkout lanes.
Every.
Single.
Time.
No matter which line I choose, I somehow end up behind someone who is about to embark on a life-changing checkout experience.
You know the person.
The one who suddenly remembers they have seventeen coupons that expired during the Clinton administration.
Or the shopper paying entirely in pennies.
Or the person who decides today is the perfect day to write a check.
A check!
In 2026!
I honestly expect the cashier to ask if they also brought a carrier pigeon to deliver the receipt.
The Checkout Line Curse
It doesn't matter how carefully I study the lines.
I analyze them like I'm coaching the final drive of the Super Bowl.
"This lady only has four items."
"That guy has one gallon of milk."
"This line is definitely moving faster."
I confidently make my selection...
And within thirty seconds...
The milk guy is discussing the history of dairy products with the cashier.
The woman with four items needs a price check on organic kale.
Someone's rewards card won't scan.
The register freezes.
A manager is summoned.
The cashier goes on break.
Meanwhile, the line I almost chose has processed what appears to be an entire football stadium.
Is This a Cosmic Joke?
At some point, I started wondering...
Is the Universe trying to tell me something?
Or does it simply enjoy watching me slowly age beside the chewing gum display?
Maybe somewhere out there, there's a committee of metaphysical beings taking bets.
"Watch this... he's going to pick Register Four again."
"Should we send someone paying with pennies?"
"No... let's really challenge him today. Bring in the person who forgot their wallet!"
Everyone laughs.
I sigh.
The price check begins.
Patience Isn't Learned on Vacation
Here's the annoying thing about patience.
You can't really learn it when everything is going perfectly.
Patience only shows up when something refuses to happen on your schedule.
Traffic.
Airports.
Internet outages.
Waiting rooms.
And yes...
Checkout lines.
It's easy to say you're patient when nobody is testing you.
The real test happens when the person in front of you suddenly decides to compare prices on twelve different brands of barbecue sauce.
Maybe the Universe Is Slowing Us Down
From a metaphysical perspective, maybe these little delays aren't punishments.
Maybe they're invitations.
An invitation to breathe.
To notice the people around us.
To stop rushing toward whatever comes next.
Life has become one giant race.
Fast food.
High-speed internet.
One-day shipping.
Instant messages.
We expect everything immediately.
Then the Universe quietly says,
"Not today."
And suddenly we're standing behind someone who's trying to remember their phone number for the rewards program.
The Hidden Gift
Have you ever noticed that sometimes the delay saves you from something?
Maybe the extra three minutes means you miss a traffic accident.
Maybe you arrive exactly when your friend needs you.
Maybe your timing changes for reasons you'll never understand.
I've always found that fascinating.
Sometimes what feels like an inconvenience is actually invisible guidance.
Or...
Maybe the cashier simply ran out of receipt paper.
I'm open to both possibilities.
The People in Front of Us Have Stories
Here's another thought.
That person taking forever...
Maybe they're lonely.
Maybe chatting with the cashier is one of the few conversations they'll have all day.
Maybe they're elderly and doing the best they can.
Maybe they're overwhelmed.
Maybe they're distracted because something difficult is happening in their life.
We rarely know the story standing three feet in front of us.
A little compassion can make the wait feel a whole lot shorter.
Well...
Maybe not shorter.
But definitely lighter.
My Checkout Strategy
I've decided to stop trying to outsmart the grocery store.
Clearly, the checkout lanes have formed an alliance against me.
Instead, I try to use the time differently.
I smile at people.
I notice something funny.
I appreciate the fact that I have a cart full of food.
Sometimes I even imagine Bigfoot shopping somewhere in the store.
(You know he'd buy the family-size beef jerky.)
It turns waiting into observing.
And observing is a lot more enjoyable than silently arguing with the scanner.
Making Peace With Life
Making Peace With Life isn't about always choosing the fastest checkout lane.
It's about realizing that happiness shouldn't depend on it.
Some days you'll fly through the line in thirty seconds.
Other days you'll witness a price check, a coupon debate, a checkbook, two crying toddlers, a rewards card malfunction, and someone paying with exact change.
That's life.
It's wonderfully unpredictable.
So the next time you find yourself trapped behind someone who appears to be negotiating an international peace treaty before buying bananas...
Smile.
Take a deep breath.
Look around.
The Universe might be teaching patience.
Or maybe...
Just maybe...
It has a fantastic sense of humor.
Either way...
You're eventually going to get your groceries.
And who knows?
The extra five minutes might be exactly what you needed to finally...
Make Peace With Life.
