The Legend of Octo-Foot

Octo-Foot - Make Peace With Life New Mascot

The Legend of Octo-Foot

The Creature Who Finally Made Peace With Life and Became our Mascot

Somewhere between the deep blue Pacific Ocean and the misty forests of the Pacific Northwest lives a creature that science has never been able to explain.

Mostly because science has never actually seen him.

And also because science tends to get a little uncomfortable when you start talking about an eight-armed Bigfoot who enjoys mountain biking.

His official name is Octo-Foot.

His friends, however, call him Big-Pus.

Yes. He knows.

He has heard the jokes.

He's made peace with them.

Nobody Quite Knows Where He Came From

The legend of Octo-Foot begins somewhere along the rugged Pacific coast.

According to one story, Bigfoot was wandering along the beach one evening when he discovered a strange glowing tide pool.

According to another, an enormous octopus crawled out of the Pacific during a full moon and disappeared into the forest.

And according to a fisherman named Larry who had consumed approximately nine beers before telling the story, there was a UFO involved.

Octo-Foot refuses to confirm any version.

Whenever someone asks where he came from, he simply smiles and says:

"Does it really matter?"

Then one of his tentacles steals a french fry from their plate.

Being Different Wasn't Always Easy

Growing up as Octo-Foot wasn't exactly simple.

The Bigfoots thought he was too octopus.

The octopuses thought he was way too hairy.

Humans couldn't decide whether to photograph him, run away from him, or start a podcast about him.

For years, Octo-Foot tried desperately to figure out where he belonged.

He tried living entirely in the forest.

Too dry.

He tried living entirely underwater.

Too wet.

He tried living in Portland.

Actually, that worked pretty well.

But something still bothered him.

Octo-Foot kept looking around at everyone else and thinking:

Why can't I just be normal?

He wished he had two arms instead of tentacles.

He wished he didn't leave enormous footprints everywhere.

He wished birds wouldn't occasionally land on his head because they thought he was a tree.

He wished people would stop taking blurry photographs of him.

Then one morning, sitting on a rock overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Octo-Foot had a realization.

Maybe the problem wasn't that he was different.

Maybe the problem was that he thought he wasn't supposed to be different.

That changed everything.

Make Peace With Life

Octo-Foot stopped trying to figure out what he was supposed to be.

Instead, he started enjoying what he already was.

Bigfoot legs?

Fantastic for hiking.

Tentacle arms?

Amazing for carrying groceries.

Eight arms also meant he could hold a coffee, answer his phone, wave at someone, scratch his back, carry three grocery bags and still have an arm available for emergencies.

Suddenly being Octo-Foot seemed pretty awesome.

He stopped asking:

"Why am I like this?"

And started asking:

"What can I do with this?"

That became his philosophy.

And eventually, it became something even bigger:

MAKE PEACE WITH LIFE™

Not defeat life.

Not control life.

Not figure out every damn thing about life.

Just…

Make Peace With Life.

Big-Pus Becomes a Legend

These days, Octo-Foot spends most of his time traveling.

People have supposedly spotted him hiking through national parks.

Mountain biking through forests.

Meditating beside alpine lakes.

Surfing the Oregon coast.

Sitting around campfires.

Exploring strange metaphysical places.

Occasionally drinking a good beer.

And once, according to a photograph of extremely questionable authenticity, riding through a Taco Bell drive-thru at 2:17 in the morning.

He wears his bright blue Make Peace With Life™ shirt everywhere he goes.

People sometimes stare.

Octo-Foot doesn't care.

He spent too much of his life worrying about what everyone else thought.

Now he simply waves a tentacle.

Sometimes two.

The Wisdom of Octo-Foot

Despite his ridiculous appearance, Octo-Foot has become something of a philosopher.

His philosophy isn't complicated.

He believes life is weird.

People are weird.

The universe is extremely weird.

And perhaps happiness doesn't come from eliminating all that weirdness.

Maybe happiness comes from realizing that you are allowed to be part of it.

You don't have to understand everything.

You don't have to become someone else.

You don't have to reach some imaginary finish line before you're allowed to enjoy being alive.

Sometimes you simply need to stand on the shore, feel the ocean hitting your enormous Bigfoot feet, stretch your tentacles toward the sky and say:

"This life is pretty damn strange."

And then smile.

Because so are you.

Be More Like Big-Pus

Octo-Foot doesn't have everything figured out.

Sometimes his tentacles get tangled.

Sometimes he takes the wrong trail.

Sometimes he falls off his bike.

Sometimes he worries about things that never happen.

Sometimes life kicks him squarely in his enormous hairy butt.

But he keeps moving.

He keeps exploring.

He keeps laughing.

He keeps asking questions.

And when life doesn't make sense, he doesn't immediately assume something has gone terribly wrong.

He remembers something that took him years to understand:

Life was never supposed to make perfect sense.

It was supposed to be experienced.

So perhaps the next time you're worried that you're too strange, too different, too old, too young, too late, too early, too hairy, too tentacled—or simply not where you thought you would be by now—remember Octo-Foot.

You don't have to fit perfectly into the world.

You just have to find your way of walking through it.

Or swimming through it.

Or biking through it.

Whatever works.

Because somewhere out there, Big-Pus is cruising down a mountain trail with eight tentacles flapping in the breeze, a ridiculous smile on his face and four completely unnecessary cup holders attached to his bicycle.

And if that guy can Make Peace With Life…

maybe the rest of us can too.
