What the Loss of the Penny Really Does to Our Economy, Our Thoughts... and Maybe Even Our Souls

A penny holding up a sign that says Save Me

What the Loss of the Penny Really Does to Our Economy, Our Thoughts... and Maybe Even Our Souls

Poor little penny.

For over 230 years, it faithfully rolled around in our pockets, hid beneath couch cushions, mysteriously disappeared in the washing machine, and somehow managed to collect enough lint to start its own sweater collection.

Now people are saying it has outlived its usefulness.

The penny is becoming the rotary phone of currency.

And while economists are busy debating production costs and rounding transactions to the nearest nickel...

I can't help but wonder...

What does losing the penny do to us?

Not just financially...

But mentally...

Emotionally...

And, of course...

Metaphysically.

Every Penny Had a Purpose

Think about how often we used the phrase:

"Every penny counts."

It wasn't really about the penny.

It was about the lesson.

Small things matter.

Tiny efforts add up.

Little acts of kindness become big changes.

One smile.

One compliment.

One extra hug.

One encouraging text.

One penny at a time...

Life changes.

When we lose the penny, I wonder if we also lose a tiny reminder that small things have tremendous power.

The Penny Was the Underdog

Nobody ever got excited about finding a penny.

Unless...

It was heads up.

Then suddenly everyone became an amateur philosopher.

"It's good luck!"

Amazing how quickly one cent could become priceless.

I've watched grown adults stop in the middle of a parking lot to rescue a penny simply because Abraham Lincoln happened to be facing the sky.

Financially...

One cent.

Energetically...

A tiny treasure.

Is It Really Worthless?

People often say,

"It's only a penny."

But let's do a little metaphysical math.

One penny won't buy much.

But one hundred pennies become a dollar.

One thousand pennies become ten dollars.

One hundred thousand pennies become a thousand dollars.

Tiny things accumulate.

Isn't that exactly how life works?

One workout doesn't transform your health.

One conversation doesn't build a lifelong friendship.

One day doesn't build a career.

One act of kindness doesn't change the world...

Until millions of people begin doing it.

Maybe pennies have been teaching abundance all along.

The Psychology of Small Wins

There's something satisfying about finding money.

Even if it's just a penny.

Your brain gets a tiny burst of excitement.

"I found something!"

It isn't about becoming wealthy.

It's about discovering unexpected abundance.

That's one of the reasons children love finding coins.

They're treasure hunters.

Adults...

We're usually too busy walking past treasure because we're looking for hundred-dollar bills.

The Universe might be whispering,

"You'll never recognize big abundance if you ignore the little abundance."

Rounding Up Life

One thing that fascinates me is how quickly our minds adapt.

If everything starts getting rounded to the nearest nickel...

Will we begin rounding other parts of our lives?

"That compliment was close enough."

"That apology was good enough."

"That friendship will survive without another phone call."

Life isn't built on rounding.

It's built on details.

Sometimes the smallest effort creates the biggest difference.

Pennies and Gratitude

The penny has always been humble.

It never tried to be flashy.

It wasn't silver.

It wasn't gold.

It simply showed up every day and quietly did its job.

There's something admirable about that.

Not everyone needs to be the hundred-dollar bill.

Sometimes being the dependable penny changes more lives.

Teachers.

Parents.

Neighbors.

Volunteers.

Friends.

Most of them will never become famous.

Yet they quietly make the world better one small moment at a time.

That's penny energy.

Maybe Lincoln Is Smiling

I like to imagine Abraham Lincoln looking down and saying,

"Really? After everything I did... you couldn't keep me around for one cent?"

Then again...

Lincoln was known for his wisdom.

He'd probably remind us that character isn't measured by what jingles in your pocket.

It's measured by what lives in your heart.

Still...

I think he'd appreciate someone picking up a lucky penny every once in a while.

The Penny and the Energy of Abundance

Metaphysically, abundance doesn't arrive all at once.

It grows.

One idea.

One opportunity.

One relationship.

One step.

One penny.

One day.

The Universe rarely dumps a mountain of blessings on your doorstep overnight.

Instead...

It quietly sends little gifts that accumulate over time.

The question is...

Are we paying enough attention to notice them?

What If We Become the Penny?

Here's my favorite thought.

What if each of us is someone else's penny?

We may not feel especially valuable on a given day.

We may think our kindness isn't making much difference.

Our smile isn't changing anything.

Our encouragement doesn't matter.

But maybe...

To someone else...

We're exactly the little bit of hope they needed that day.

Never underestimate small contributions.

The Universe certainly doesn't.

Making Peace With Life

Whether the penny stays in circulation or eventually becomes a museum piece, its lesson shouldn't disappear.

Life isn't built by giant moments alone.

It's built by tiny moments stacked together.

Small choices.

Small acts of courage.

Small kindnesses.

Small adventures.

Small laughs.

Small victories.

That's how abundance grows.

So the next time you find a penny lying on the sidewalk...

Go ahead...

Pick it up.

Not because you're about to retire on your newfound wealth.

But because it's a tiny reminder that the smallest things often carry the greatest energy.

And if the penny eventually disappears from our pockets...

Let's make sure it never disappears from our way of thinking.

Because when it comes to happiness, kindness, love, friendship, and peace...

Every penny still counts.

And that's one investment that will always help us Make Peace With Life.
