Random Acts of Silliness: Your Spirit Could Probably Use a Few

Random Acts of Silliness: Your Spirit Could Probably Use a Few

We hear a lot about random acts of kindness, and I am completely on board with those. But I would also like to nominate another category of spontaneous human behavior that deserves considerably more attention:

Random Acts of Silliness.

What exactly is a random act of silliness? It's doing something completely unnecessary, harmless, ridiculous, and fun simply because the moment presents itself. Dance down the grocery aisle when your favorite song comes on. Make up a ridiculous voice while talking to your dog. Have a five-minute kitchen dance party with your kids. Wear goofy socks to an important meeting. Leave your partner a note that says, "You have been officially selected as today's Sexiest Human Alive." Sing into the vacuum cleaner. Give your car a name and congratulate it when you find an amazing parking spot. The important part is that there doesn't need to be a reason.

Silliness Changes the Energy

From a metaphysical perspective, silliness can be a wonderful little energy disruptor. We humans are remarkably talented at getting trapped inside our own heads. We worry about tomorrow, replay yesterday, analyze everything happening today, and somehow manage to turn choosing what to have for dinner into a strategic planning session.

Then somebody does something completely ridiculous.

You laugh.

And for a moment, the pattern breaks.

Your attention moves away from stress and toward joy, connection, playfulness, and the present moment. Whether you describe that as raising your vibration, shifting your energy, changing your emotional state, or simply getting out of a crappy mood, the result can feel surprisingly powerful.

Adults Need Recess Too

Somewhere along the journey into adulthood, many of us apparently received an invisible memo:

IMPORTANT: You are an adult now. Please stop having unnecessary fun.

Kids don't need permission to be silly.

They'll wear a cape to breakfast, dance because somebody said the word banana, make strange noises for twenty minutes, and laugh so hard at something completely stupid that they can't breathe.

Then we grow up and start worrying about whether we look ridiculous.

Here's a metaphysical revelation:

You probably do look ridiculous sometimes.

Congratulations.

You're human.

And the people having the most fun in life usually aren't the ones constantly checking whether everyone else approves of how they're having it.

Silliness Connects Us

Random silliness can also create wonderful little moments between people.

Inside jokes.

Unexpected laughter.

Funny traditions.

Ridiculous photographs.

Those weird stories that couples, families, coworkers, and friends continue telling for years.

"Remember when we..."

Those moments become part of the energetic fabric connecting us.

Interestingly, when we look back at our lives, some of our favorite memories aren't the perfectly planned ones.

They're the ridiculous ones.

The vacation where something went wrong.

The terrible dancing.

The joke that got completely out of control.

The moment everyone started laughing and couldn't stop.

Silliness creates memories because silliness creates emotion.

Schedule Absolutely Nothing

The best random acts of silliness aren't planned.

That's why they're random.

So give yourself permission to occasionally follow the ridiculous impulse.

Dance.

Sing badly.

Tell the stupid joke.

Make the funny face.

Talk to your houseplants.

Have a staring contest with your dog.

Put googly eyes on something that definitely doesn't need googly eyes.

And if somebody asks what you're doing, simply tell them:

"Spiritual work."

Because maybe it is.

We spend so much time trying to discover the deep secrets of happiness, enlightenment, purpose, and inner peace that we occasionally forget one of the easiest ways to change our energy:

Have some fun.

Life will provide plenty of opportunities to be serious.

You don't have to volunteer for overtime.

So today, commit one completely unnecessary Random Act of Silliness.

Laugh.

Make someone else laugh.

Break the routine.

Shake up the energy.

And discover that sometimes the shortest path toward Making Peace With Life involves acting completely ridiculous for absolutely no reason at all.
