Why Are Bananas So Darn Funny?

A Metaphysical Investigation Into the Universe’s Most Comedic Fruit

There are certain things in life that are just naturally funny. Whoopee cushions. Bad dancing. Dogs wearing sunglasses. And for reasons I’m not sure science has adequately investigated… bananas. Think about it. Apples aren't funny. Nobody walks into a comedy club holding an orange and immediately gets a laugh. But put a banana in someone's hand and suddenly there are possibilities. Perhaps the banana isn't merely a fruit. Perhaps it carries its own strange little frequency of cosmic silliness.

Consider how often bananas have escaped the produce department and entered our culture. We've turned bananas into art—sometimes art that sells for ridiculous amounts of money. We've got the delightfully unconventional baseball spectacle of the Savannah Bananas, proving that even baseball gets more entertaining when you add bananas. We've got banana splits, where apparently humanity looked at an ordinary banana and thought, "This needs three scoops of ice cream, whipped cream, syrup, nuts and a cherry." And, of course, we had The Banana Splits, those wonderfully bizarre costumed characters whose very existence seems to prove that someone once attended a television meeting and confidently announced, "I have an idea involving giant animals, rock music and bananas." And everyone else said, "We're in."

Metaphysically, maybe the banana represents something we desperately need: permission to be ridiculous. We spend so much time trying to appear intelligent, responsible, successful, sophisticated and spiritually evolved that we can forget there is enormous positive energy in simply being silly. Laughter changes the energy of a room. Humor breaks tension. Playfulness connects people. And sometimes something as completely ridiculous as pretending a banana is a telephone can pull us out of our own heads for a moment. Hello? Yes, Universe? I'm sorry, you're breaking up. I appear to have eaten the antenna.

Perhaps that's why bananas have achieved a level of comedy that broccoli can only dream about. They're curved. They're bright yellow. They come with their own biodegradable carrying case. They can become dessert, art, sports entertainment, television characters and one of the oldest slapstick jokes imaginable—although please don't actually throw banana peels on the floor. Maybe the spiritual lesson of the banana is simply this: life doesn't always need to be taken so seriously. Sometimes raising your vibration doesn't require meditation, crystals or discovering the secrets of the cosmos. Sometimes you just need to laugh at something completely stupid.

And if the Universe really does communicate through signs and symbols, perhaps the banana is its way of telling us:

"Lighten up. You're taking this whole enlightenment thing way too seriously."

And that might be one of the funniest ways to Make Peace With Life.
